Should you have a linked in page for your business?

Yes.

Should you spend a lot of time to build it out and build a community around it?

Probably not.

Are there exceptions?

Of course.

Having a LinkedIn presence makes plenty of sense. Doing the basics like grabbing a custom LinkedIn url is quick and easy. Even more advance LinkedIn marketing efforts can make some sense but  devoting a lot of time to your company’s LinkedIn page probably is not the best use of your precious time.

Let’s take each question one at a time.

Should you have a page? Absolutely.

Getting a quick LinkedIn Page is pretty simple and – as you should know – customers are looking for you. LinkedIn often shows up on the first page of Google results so that alone makes it a good reason to be have a page and  making you that much more easy to find.

Should you spend a lot of time on your LinkedIn presence? Probably not.

So you may ask – why have a page if you are not going to “work it”?

Unless you are in a Business-to-Business specialized industry – a comprehensive LinkedIn page and community while nice – is not really necessary. An exception, of course, is if you are a recruiter. Then you should make LinkedIn a centerpiece or at least cornerstone of your online social attention. Also, if you are hiring and have the need for recruiting employee talent then maintaining and building your company’s LinkedIn page is important.

Otherwise, LinkedIn is not a place many people spend much time and a simple strong initial descriptive page will do the trick for most businesses and organizations.

That said – LinkedIn can be a great place for you to prospect new leads and employees too. One tip is to access LinkedIn Answers and contribute to the community by which you will be making new professional contacts.
